Breast Augmentation

Preparing for breast augmentation surgery

Technically, a breast augmentation is called as an augmentation mammoplasty. It is basically a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. There are a number of common reasons behind the decision to get a breast augmentation:

  • Enhancing, balancing or changing the body structure.
  • A change in breast shape is can happen after pregnancy. Breast lifts are done in order to restore their original shape.
  • There can be a variation in size between the breasts; a breast augmentation makes them the same size.
  • Restorative breast surgery because of disease, such as breast cancer.

A proper discussion with the surgeon is necessary before a breast augmentation. It will give you some clarity about the process, as well as benefits and possible side effects. During a breast augmentation, an implant is inserted behind the breast to increase the size of the bust-line. Breast augmentation can give you a lot of confidence as it will change your appearance. You also need to be healthy before you go for breast surgery.

The two most common types of breast implants:

  • Silicone shell implant filled with silicone gel
  • Silicone shell implant filled with salt water (saline)

Saline-filled implants are done without any restrictions, but for gel-filled implants, permission is required from the Food and Drug Administration.

Risks of Breast Augmentation

There are several risks associated with breast augmentation surgery, including:

  • Capsular contracture. This generally happens when the scar around the implant begins to tighten, which makes the breast feel harder and uncomfortable. Removal or replacement of the implant can solve this problem.
  • Some women may have swelling and pain due to excessive bleeding during the surgery.
  • There is a threat of infection soon after the surgery. It takes time to heal, and exposure to infectious elements can cause trouble.
  • There can be adverse effects on the nipples after surgery. They can become oversensitive, hard or even numb.
  • There is always the chance that the implant may break or leak, but it's not a fatal condition. It can happen for many reasons, such as excessive pressure on the area.

Other Concerns

Breast augmentation does not cause any adverse effects during or after pregnancy; breast milk will be available for the baby. There are no instances of breast cancers amongst the women who underwent breast augmentation. However, you should still see your doctor for regular breast exams, to detect any potential complications.

Breast augmentation surgery is performed at many hospitals, so the cost depends on the facilities provided. The cost varies as well, so people can go for the surgery according to their budget. An anesthetic will be given to the patient in order to carry out the surgery. Complete healing and recovery will take couple of weeks.
