What is Adapalene?
Adapalene, sold under the brand name Differin, is a prescription retinoid gel that affects the growth of skin cells in ways that are still not entirely understood. But even with the lack of complete understanding, the medication has been deemed safe to use on a number of skin conditions.
Uses for Adapalene
The most common use for adapalene is as an acne medication for those with severe acne, as it seems to reduce the number and intensity of pimples formed on the skin. It is also used on other skin issues, including keratosis pilaris, which is an autosomal, genetic follicle condition that causes rough, red bumps to for m on the upper and lower arms, thighs, buttocks and other areas of the body.
Adapalene is offered as a topical gel or cream, at various concentrations, and is typically applied to the skin for a pre-determined amount of time, as recommended by a doctor.
Possible Side Effects of Adapalene
Side effects of adapalene are relatively minor, including conditions like redness, dryness and itchiness. Sensitivity to the sun is another common side-effect, so it's advised that those using the medication avoid long-term sun exposure and wear sunscreen or cover up as much as possible.
Adapalene may also cause flare-ups in acne, which may seem counter-productive to treatment. These breakouts typically lessen as treatment continues, however.
Though only small amounts of adapalene absorb into the skin upon application, it's not known whether the medication is harmful during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
