Tips for sufferers of chronic back pain

As many as 80 percent of Americans are expected to experience back pain at some point in their lives, so it makes sense to learn as much as possible about maintaining healthy back. Most back pain originates as the result of an accident, muscle strains through sports or from improper lifting procedures at work and at home. Some types of disease are also responsible for back pain.

Back Pain Symptoms

Back injuries are serious business because they are often debilitating and require time away from the job (and even housework) to adequately heal. While back injuries can be caused any number of ways, back pain symptoms are relatively universal and include the following:

  • Stubborn stiffness or aching along the spine from the base of the skull to the hip.
  • Persistent middle or lower back ache, especially after extended periods of standing or sitting.
  • Muscle spasms in the lower back when attempting to stand straight.
  • Acute localized pain in the neck, upper or lower back noticed after lifting heavy objects or engaging in physically demanding activities.
  • Radiating lower back pain that may reach all the way down the back of the thigh and through the calf to the toes.

If your back pain is accompanied by tingling or numbness in your arms or legs, it may indicate damage to the spinal cord.

Types of Back Pain

Most people describe their pain as being lower, middle or upper back pain. The pain experienced can be chronic or isolated, severe or dull. Any instance of severe back pain, regardless of your previous medical history, needs to be diagnosed by your family doctor. Your doctor can then refer you to a specialist or prescribe back pain medication and instruct you on the best ways to recuperate. Avoid self-diagnosing your back pain as it could be related to other health problems including fibromyalgia or sciatica. Back pain along with fever and burning or strong smelling urine may also be the result of a urinary tract infection.

Dealing with Back Pain

It's important to learn what the cause is of your back pain, as this is the only way that to keep it from reoccurring. Avoid the temptation to seek relief from back pain by popping painkillers; not only can this become habit-forming but you're also only treating the symptoms and not the cause of the pain. Any back pain treatment as recommended by a doctor will also include the steps you need to take to avoid causing the same trouble in the future. The doctor may advise that you get into better shape, avoid heavy lifting or even wear more supportive footwear; sometimes lower back pain relief is as simple as wearing specialty shoes that provide added cushioning and absorb more shock away from the lower back.
