Diet

How your diet can change your life

We're constantly being warned about the obesity and morbid obesity epidemic. Along with exercise, a healthy diet is essential to ensure a healthy body weight. But with so many diets on the market, it's difficult to know which approach to take. The most important thing to remember is that you should always contact your healthcare practitioner whenever you're planning on making a drastic change to your diet.

Benefits

A healthy diet has numerous benefits. Healthy foods give your body the nutrients it needs, which in turn provides you with energy to ensure your body functions to its full potential. Not only do nutrients build and strengthen tendons, muscles and bones, they also help control blood pressure. A healthy diet can also help you maintain a healthy body weight.

A proper diet also decreases your risk of disease. Certain foods, like vegetables and fruit, can reduce the risk of certain cancers, stroke and coronary heart disease. A healthy diet could also assist you in controlling some diseases. For example, healthy eating can help diabetics control their blood sugar.

The USDA Food Guide and Canada's Food Guide are two excellent resources when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet. But what about diet programs like Atkins or South Beach? The best advice is to contact your doctor to get their opinion. Here are some factors to consider when looking into any diet:

  1. Does the person who created the program have any relevant credentials?
  2. A healthy diet is all about balance. You should always eat food from all food groups.
  3. Drinking water is important to any diet.
  4. It's unhealthy to lose too much weight too quickly. Contact your doctor so you can set safe and attainable goals.
  5. Portion control is of utmost importance. Ensure that you understand exactly what a serving means.
  6. Diet alone is not enough. Ensure you're getting enough exercise.
  7. Don't allow yourself to be "sold." Do your own research and talk to your doctor.

What About Diet Pills?

There are a large variety of diet pills on the market, with a wide range of effectiveness and safety standards. While some include all-natural ingredients, others include caffeine, which may or may not have an adverse effect on you. Again, contacting a healthcare professional is your best bet. But even if you decide to take a diet pill, healthy eating and exercise are still important.

I am 53yo woman, 68", 236lbs, with fibromyalgia, and chronic pain syndrome. I have tried to diet on my own, and stress would revert me back to my old habits. Heart disease and diabetes run n my family. I don't have alot of money so I can't afford those already prepared meals. Now my knees r getting in the game snd I sometime can't move I ache and hurt so bad. I know my life would b so much better if I had a good support system, because my family has poor eating habts also. I pray that someone with a nutrtional background could help me figure out a weekly diet plan and exercises, that I would be okay n my skin.

atkins diet works! i gained almost 70 lbs. w/my first baby. went on atkins 1 yr. later and lost 80 lbs. 4 yrs later i became pregnet again and never gained much weight during the entire 9 months, dr. said i was doing great because i was eating healthier than before. now 30 yrs later and i am giving it another whirl. after menopause and hitting my 50s i would like to lose those middleage spread lbs. dr. says if i eat as healthy as before i will do great. the old joints don't like any extra lbs.soooooooooooo dr. atkins, here i come, again!

The Atkins Diet is a program created by Dr. Atkins hiself, that you all can do is to borrow from your local library his books ( he has many including wight maintinance and meal plan books for each one of the 4 phases of the plan) The bars and other products developed by him are not esential part of the diet but a complement to it if you want to have a little sweet in the safe zone of Net Carbs, Eat the bars and the shakes as only source of meal is not what is intended by Dr. Atkins, This is not a Slim Fast or Med Fast etc... diet, this is a program where you can actually change for good you eating habits withour feeling deprived. In resume, once that you had reach you goal wieght the only prohibited food here is at the end just refined flours and simple sugars. Read the books, that makes the bid difference! good luck

Back in 1972 I needed to lose weight to get into the US Air Force. Atkins was new but I went on it and lost 50 lbs and maintained that loss through much of my tour. However, after discharge regained. My sister was getting married in 1998, went back onl Atkins lost over 90 lbs. But, the moment I put a "carb" in my mouth at the rehearsal dinner I was lost and regained so much weight now I can't stand myself. I'm 5'3" and weigh approximately 250. Am restarting Atkins again and need morale booster! I know it works!

I would really like to try the Atkins diet. I bought a box today and had my first bar for lunch and it was actually very good. I would like to have it work, so that once my cold is over I can exercise on my tread climber, but need to be able to breath and this is not possible at this time

I have done the Dr. Atkins diets on 2 occasions and always had very good results with it. I usually have bacon & eggs with cheese with 1 slice of healthy choice diet bread and water for breakfast, for mid day snack I would eat sugar free jello with cool whip (for my sweet tooth and for dinner I would have 2 pieces of captain d's fish with green beans or baked chicken with a small potato with butter. The key to try and keep your carbs as low as possible, after the first week I added limited fruit and salad and added more meats, steaks, hamburger, nothing with filler.
