Weight Loss

Easy weight loss tips for every age

We're constantly being reminded of the importance of losing weight and keeping it off. But why is it so important? And how can we ensure we maintain a healthy weight?

Why is weight loss important?

  • You will have increased confidence in yourself.
  • You reduce the risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
  • You are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
  • If you have a healthy lifestyle, you're acting as role model for friends and family who struggle with their weight.
  • You will reduce your risk of getting certain cancers.
  • If you reduce your stomach fat, you'll release some of the pressure off your back.

What is the best way to lose weight and keep it off?

  • Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise.
  • Set realistic goals for yourself. You might want to team up with a fitness or weight-loss professional to decide on what a reasonable goal should be. Having a target weight or target measurements will help keep you motivated, especially on those days when you feel like giving up.
  • Establish a plan of how you're going to reach your goal. Make separate sections for diet and weight.

Diet

  • Use the United States Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid Food Guide System.
  • Drink plenty of water. Speak to your healthcare professional to determine your ideal daily water intake.
  • Educate yourself on how to cook healthy food. Take cooking classes, buy new cookbooks or check out recipes on the Internet.
  • Frequently eating small meals is a good way to boost your metabolism.
  • Learn to read and understand food labels.
  • Stop buying unhealthy food. If it's in your house, you're bound to eat it.
  • Keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat and when you eat it. This way, you'll be able to identify your bad habits.
  • Exercise

    • Try different physical fitness programs to find out which ones you enjoy. If you enjoy exercise, you're more likely to keep doing it.
    • Find a workout buddy. Not only will the time go by faster, you'll also have someone to keep you motivated.
    • In addition to your workouts, try taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Park further away in the parking lot. While you're watching your favorite show on TV, do a couple sets of crunches.

    What about diet pills?

Consult a healthcare professional about diet pills to see if this is the best approach for you. Make sure you know the risks and costs associated with this option.

What should you avoid when trying to lose weight?

    • Setting unrealistic goals.
    • Having a negative attitude towards diet and exercise.
    • Having the mindset that it's going to be easy to lose weight.
    • Having negative temptations, like junk food, in your environment.
