Laser Eye Surgery

All about laser eye surgery

Many people feel that they do not look good in glasses, and find the use of contact lenses to be inconvenient or awkward. To overcome these problems, they are turning to laser eye surgery. In fact, every year about 700,000 Americans have laser eye surgery, usually lasik surgery.

What is Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. It can correct or assist with most of the reasons that people need to wear glasses -- nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It does this by correcting the shape of the cornea, so that light can focus in the eye properly. Some lasik surgery is done completely by laser; some also use an instrument with a blade to create a flap over the cornea. This flap is used as a sort of bandage over the lasered area.

Of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lasik eye surgery, about 95% are completely happy with it. Some others complain that they have dry eyes, see glare, and have trouble driving at night. Some even end up with worse vision problems than they had before the surgery. And, as the cornea continues to age, a person's vision continues to deteriorate.

Corrective laser eye surgery is most successful at correcting mild nearsightedness. In many cases, people will still require glasses, but the prescriptions will not be as strong. Results with farsightedness and astigmatism are less predictable. As with any surgery, there are risks. Carefully select the surgeon that you will choose to do your eye surgery. Ask around and don't take the person with the lowest price.

What is the Cost of Lasik Eye Surgery?

There are many factors that help to determine the cost of lasik eye surgery. Among these are the surgeon's experience, geographical location, and whether they are doing the surgery completely by laser or with the aid of a bladed instrument. The fee also depends on whether pre and post operative visits are included, and whether medication costs are included. Costs of lasik eye surgery are always given per eye. So, if you are having both eyes done, you need to double the numbers. The average price for complete lasik per eye is $2150.00, if the bladed instrument is also used, the price is $1580.00. Due to the United States economy, the price of lasik surgery has not increased much in the last few years.
